UK Wire and Cable Conductors Consumption to Reach 251,000 Tons by 2022

According to a recent report released by CRU, an international commodity research organization, the consumption of wire and cable conductors in the UK will be approximately 241,000 tons in 2021. In 2022, UK wire and cable conductor consumption is expected to grow by 3% to 251,000 tons, driven by increased demand from the construction industry as well as public power agencies.

Major Consumer Markets for Wire And Cable Conductors

From 2021, the construction industry as well as public power institutions are the most important consumer market for wire and cable conductors in the UK. The construction industry accounts for 42% of consumption, mainly in low-voltage energy cables (cables de energía de baja tensión) and other power cables. Public power institutions accounted for 21% of consumption, which includes a large number of electric vehicle charging devices. This is due to the rapid development of electric vehicles.

In the UK, the use of electric vehicles continues to rise, with new industry data proving that more than a fifth of registrations in the first half of 2022 will be for electric vehicles. In the automotive sector, demand for low-voltage energy cables also accounts for 10% of total conductor consumption.

Wire and Cable Conductor Materials

Wire and cable conductor materials, usually copper, aluminum and aluminum alloy. The resistivity of aluminum cable is about 1.64 times that of copper. When the load capacity is the same, the aluminum conductor (conductor de aluminio) cross section is about 1.5 times that of copper, and the diameter is about 1.2 times that of copper.

The mechanical properties of copper conductors are better than those of aluminum, with good ductility and easy processing and installation. The fatigue strength of copper material is about 1.7 times that of pure aluminum. And there is no creep and reliable joints. However, the density of aluminum materials is small. The mass of aluminum conductors is only half that of copper when the resistance value is the same.

The consumption of wire and cable conductors in the UK is mainly related to copper materials. And in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the energy crisis, the raw material may be affected to a certain extent.

Main Future Applications for Wire and Cable Conductors

In January 2022, the UK government announced more than £60 million of public and private funding to advance research and development of floating offshore wind projects. The government plans to invest £31.6 million in 11 projects. The UK wind energy market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 6% during the forecast period of 2022-2027. In 2022, the consumption of wire and cable conductors in the UK is expected to grow along with the growth in demand for electricity, renewable energy, new energy vehicles, and other sectors.
